Held in the heart of Leadville at over 10,000 feet, this iconic race is the second jewel in the sport’s Triple Crown and a cornerstone of Colorado’s mining heritage. On race morning, teams thunder down Harrison Avenue before climbing into the rugged mining district on Leadville’s east side—retracing the footsteps of prospectors who once raced to stake their claims. This isn’t just a race—it’s a test of partnership, grit, and stubborn determination. You and your burro must move as one, carrying traditional mining tools and earning every step across high-altitude terrain shaped by history and hardship. The Courses Long Course: The classic route remains unchanged—an authentic, high-country 21 mile challenge that has defined burro racing for generations. A historic out-and-back from downtown Leadville climbing toward Mosquito Pass—gaining nearly 3,000 feet from town to over 13,000 ft—before turning back for a fast, rugged descent to the finish. Short Course: A refreshed experience is on the horizon—course details to be announced, so stay tuned for updates. Expect 6-8 miles with stunning views. Whether you’re chasing a podium, chasing your burro, or just chasing the spirit of the West, this race delivers one of the most unique endurance experiences in North America. Over 70 years strong. One burro. One runner. No shortcuts.
