Sam’s Rainbow Run: Honoring a Legacy of Love and Kindness
Sam was a remarkable young man whose life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in September 2022. At just 23 years old, Sam had recently graduated from Colorado State University (CSU) in December 2021 and was pursuing his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He began flight training in the summer of 2022, but his journey was sadly ended far too soon.
Sam’s vibrant personality and infectious energy left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. To know Sam was to love him. His smile and laugh could light up any room, and he had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. Sam came out to me, his mom, during his freshman year in college, but being gay was just one facet of who he was. Sam was an incredible athlete—a skier, climber, golfer, and more. He was also a dedicated and intelligent student, as well as a loyal son, brother, cousin, grandson, and friend. Sam had a wide circle of friends who adored him, and he is deeply missed by all.
I started Sam’s Rainbow Run as a way to honor Sam’s legacy and keep his spirit alive. Sam was passionate about helping those less fortunate. All proceeds from Sam’s Rainbow Run are donated to the CSU Pride Resource Center, which uses the funds to support students in need by assisting with tuition, housing, food, or other essentials. This event is not only a celebration of Sam’s life but also a meaningful way to spread love and kindness, values he held dear.
This year marks the fourth annual Sam’s Rainbow Run, and I am thrilled to see how it has grown. To make the event even more inclusive, we are adding a FREE Kids 1-mile run, creating an opportunity for families to come together in celebration of Pride and love for all people. It’s a fun and meaningful event that welcomes everyone—friends, families, and community members—to honor Sam and support a great cause.
Thank you for supporting Sam’s Rainbow Run and helping to keep his memory alive. Your participation and contributions not only celebrate Sam’s legacy but also make a tangible difference in the lives of CSU students in need.
Spread love and kindness,
Kelly Quinlan Sam’s Mom
